Barely Under Control!

Well, its the last week before the holiday break and the children are like a hive of bees with all the teachers working to  keep the lid on!  Here's what our week in art looks like!

Kindergarten-The kindergarten are learning about various artists who painted Santa Claus.  Some of these artists are most famous because of their renderings of this famous elf.  Whether you know it or not, you are very familiar with the artwork of Thomas Nast and Haddon Sundblom!  They will be introduced to the artist Andy Warhol and his rendering of Santa.

First Grade will be making gingerbread garland.  When I was a child, I was very familiar with folding paper and cutting out more than one item at a time.  Most children today have no idea how to do this.  This is a skill I will introduce to them via gingerbread people and gingerbread houses.  They have new sparkly crayons in their totes they can use to decorate their garland.  This will be a one day activity.

Second grade will begin drawing their tropical birds on their amate' paper.  A bird can be drawn using a circle for a head and an oval for a body.  By just adding a variety of lines in the proper places the children will be able to draw very exotic birds.  They will also add foliage to their drawings in front and in back of their birds adding depth to their pictures.

Third grade will be viewing the William Wegman DVD titled "Fay's Twelve Days of Christmas".  This is used as a review of the artist William Wegman and his delightful dogs.

Fourth grade will be creating an origami wreath using small pieces of wrapping paper.  This is a one day activity.  Origami was originally developed by the Chinese but the Japanese raised it to a high art.  This can be a challenging project for a few of the children but everyone will come home with a wreath ornament to hang on the tree.
